Bleak Friday-Chapter 7

Summary

The recession appears to have accelerated the pace at which shoppers are abandoning bricks and mortar favour of online retailers- e tailers. Black Friday also marks the start of many conventional retailers' attempt to regain the initative.

E-commence holds particular appeal in straitend times as it enables peaople to compare prices across retailers quickly and easily. Sometimes buyers can even avoid local sales taxes online. and sometimes even shipping is free! In contrast, online sales grew by 13% in 2008 to over 141 billion are predicted to graw by 11% in 2009. Online sales now account for 6 % of all retail sales in America and that figure to grow to reach 8% by 2013. Amazon's sales rose to around 5.5 billion in the thrid quarter of the year, they went up 30% from year before. Amazon also has many items for sale online and they also started selling grocceries.

Retailers are also trying to make shopping seem funand exciting to counteract the aconomic gloom. One common tactic used is to set up "pop-up" stores, which appear for a short time then they vanish again. Stores are also trying to lure costomers by offering services that are not avalible online. Best buy, has started selling music lessons along with a musical instrument.

Connection

This article relates to the textbook because it talks about how non store e-tailing is increasing insale. Stores such as Wal-Mart and Sears are General merchandise retailers and have have great sales such as black friday. Black Friday is a big sale that takes place every year and one year somebody died by getting trampled to death by the huge crowd coming into the store. People have been going to these big sales due to the reccesion and this has effected many Americans and Canadians to go shopping to these stores with large sales or outlet stores. My family and I usually go shopping on these large sales and I have noticed that the amount of people arriving has increased.
Non store retailing has been increased by a lot and many costomers choose to shop online because it is very time consuming and I don't have to waste time and money on expensive costes of gas. Ebay is a giant e-commerce that crashed on November 21st because the amount people coming on the site. These companies are growing everyday and in a few years I think that Non store retailing is going to be bigger than instore shopping.

Reflection

Black Friday and boxing day are very simular because they are both big sales were you get an rush to go to this big sales. Since the recession these days are good because you can save money on expensive things. It is also good for the retailer because they can get rid of old stock and make room for the new stock.

I think online retailing is good because I don't have to waste time going to the stores and wasting gas getting there. In a way I think that online retailing is eco-friendly because I don't have to waste my parents time getting there. On the other hand what if fraud takes place, what if somebody buys things with you're credit card number that gave online. Or what if the item I bought doesn't get sent to me or looks nothing like what it looked like in the picture.

Its incredible how Amazon sells groceries online, doesn't the food get spoiled and I wonder who would even buy it. Amazon is amazing, they have so many costomers and they still continue to grow.

Shockvertising

Summary

Toyota is being sued by a women who was being stalked by the multi billion dollar company. The alleged marketing campain upset a women, Toyota was being sued about ten million dollars. The women said, "I recieved e-mails, voicmails, and someone was following me." Toyota claimed to be different to be noticed and had seemed to go to far. A SFU profesor says,"If you go through an anoyying ad, studes show you may remeber the product, but forget why you remember it." Many advertisers have gone to far to be noticed, for example. "Diesel had shown a women brest feeding a setiant pet made of raw meat", how gross is that. Deisel had gone to far on that advertisment, I think these are very bad ways to get noticed.

Conections

The article connects many things are in the chapter three textbook. The advertisors take there rights and freedom and abuse it. The advertisors did as they wish and advertised some very gross and unapropriate things because they can do as they wish. The Canadian government plays a big role in maintaining liberties. The case was taken to trial to maintan the rights of a both Toyota and the women.

Niche marketing related the two textbook and article because the companies try to project there projects to the people who think talk about it. They attract the people by having people talk about it and visit there sites or stores to see the odd adertisments.

Reflection

I think this new way of advetising is silly and shoudn't be used. The new is a bad way, this way of advertising doesn't make me intrested in the product at all. The big companies should stop there ways because there abusing there freedom and disturbing the peace. The company owners may face many law suites if they continue there sillly ways.

Summary

I have been researching about how blockbuster is inching its way towards bankruptcy. The reason I am writing about blockbuster is because I have hade an outrageous late fee for not getting my movie in before ten o’clock AM, the fee paid was six dollars. Blockbuster has 7,500 stores, but is having a problem to compete with online DVD rentals like netflix. As new ideas are inspired by netflix and other companies blockbuster can only compete with these online companies by offering one dollar nightly rentals. Blockbuster wants to be "highly profitable" and have a "growing bass", seems like its not going to be happening. Blockbuster says its profitable, with 1.6 million Total Access subscribers. Blockbuster plans to close within 810 and 960 stores before the end of the year. The road is going to be getting rougher for blockbuster, with the laziness among the future, mailing is going to be the future. One of the biggest video stores known to almost everybody is going to be facing a crisis.

Connection

This case relates to “The Evolution of Retailing in Canada .’’ As people face problems like visiting the video store they find easier ways to do it. Something more advanced and new like renting through the mail. There is a evolution happening that blockbuster can’t compete with. This also relates to“ Use of Technology.’’ New technology is changing the way how customers shop, using something easier like online rentals. New technology is wiping out the old technology. Another case its related to is“ How to Avoid Business Failure’’, some businesses are forced to close there doors for reasons beyond the owners control. This is similar to blockbuster because more doors closed and new businesses came up and blockbuster owners cant stop the competitive business to close.

Reflection

I can’t believe such a big company is having such problems. I remember how many people were happy about the service blockbuster gave about 7 years ago. Now it seems to them that blockbuster has such horrible service. Blockbuster has a big variety of games and movies but there policies aren’t great. Paying 6 dollars for a one day late fee is outrageous! This multi-million dollar company is having problems witch should be given because if you do something bad you get hit back. All those unnecessary late fees, I don’t understand how someone renting a movie is going to return it early the next morning. My purpose of renting a movie is to have a really late night and wake up at noon the next day, not at 10 in the morning.
